What are Display Energy Certificate (DEC) Calculations?

DEC Sample

A Display Energy Certificate (DEC) shows the energy performance of a building based on its actual energy usage over a year.

Who Needs One?

If a public building has a floor area of more than 1,000 square metres and is frequently visited by members of the public it is obliged to have an A3 sized display Energy Certificate on the wall in a prominent place.

Please feel free to request a free DEC quote or contact us if you are unsure whether you need a DEC.

How can CarbonLow help?

CarbonLow Certification has supplied Display Energy Certificates for many public buildings including universities, schools, council offices and museums, including the Natural History Museum.

One of our team of qualified energy assessors will visit your site and will ask to see evidence of your energy use (a spreadsheet or copy invoices/delivery notes). He will then calculate the rating of your building and issue an advisory report making suggestions as to how this could be improved.

How long does it last?

The Display Energy Certificate itself needs to be renewed annually but the advisory report lasts for seven years.

What are the penalties if the building doesn't have one?

The enforcement of DECs is by the Office of Fair Trading who can impose a fine of £500 for failure to display a valid DEC and £1,000 for lack of an advisory report.
